Property Description
Historic Trumansburg home located near Ithaca, Cornell University, Cayuga Lake and the Finger Lakes Region of New York. It was built by Tompkins County founder’s youngest son, Erastus. This Greek Revival was built within the Revolutionary War military land tracts within the Finger Lakes and is one of the few remaining homes built by the original Treman Family. This is the first time in three decades that this extraordinary property is being offered for sale. The home sits in a private park like setting on a quiet road. It is situated on a 2.5 acre lot of woods and lawns. There is a ½ acre swimming pond, over 15' deep, with an Adirondack style dock, the original ‘Piggery’, now a garage and shop, a brick smoke house and a ‘five seater’ out house.
The house is located within the limits of the charming Village of Trumansburg and enjoys all municipal services including water, sewer, natural gas and high speed internet. It is within the highly regarded Trumansburg School District, and close to the village center with all the cultural institutions that have made Trumansburg the attractive community it is.
The home has 5 bedrooms with 3½ baths. The main and original part of the house has 9' ceilings, riginal ‘wavy’ glass in the 6/6 windows and all the molding and apportionments it was built with. Most of the floors are wide pine planks cut from the property except for one room that is chestnut and two later rooms made from wide plank pine and re-milled from a barn to match the existing floors. There is a large formal dining room that is set apart from the family room by a wood stove, and allows for both cozy as well as expansive entertaining. There is a formal parlor, a foyer, a study/office with an enamel gas fireplace in the front of the house and a library at the back overlooking the pond and wildlife. Off the dining room is an all season greenhouse. The greenhouse leads, as does the fully updated and charming kitchen, to an enclosed garden and covered porch for outside dining and entertaining. The greenhouse and the patios were constructed with slate found on the property. There is a large full bath, a half bath and laundry room on this first floor as well. At the rear of the house is a 24 x 24 great room with 14' ceilings and large windows look over the rear gardens. This space currently functions as an art studio and home gym. There are two uncovered decks (one built to accommodate a hot tub) and two covered porches on the first floor and a large terrace on the second floor overlooking the woods and distant views.
Two staircases lead up to the second floor. The central staircase in the front of the house leads to a hallway where 4 bedrooms can be found, a full bath and door to the upstairs terrace. The hall and the two larger bedrooms have original pine flooring. The two medium sized are dark oak. One of the larger bedrooms has a small adjoining room that was used as a nursery. One of the bedrooms has an adjoining room that can be used as a study.
The second stairway leads to a master suite, separate from the other bedrooms but also accessible to them. This private suite consists of the master bedroom, over looking the gardens, a full bath, large dressing area room, expansive closets and an additional room currently used as another walk in closet.
The house is built on a stone foundation with a slate floor and using original timbers. The basement ceiling is seven ft. high with a possible wine or root cellar All the original wiring has been replaced and updated as well as all the plumbing.
The property has been landscaped to reflect both the period of the house and the surrounding community. In addition to the pond area and the enclosed gardens off the back porch, there are several other garden areas and some border areas left to be wild.
This home is located in the Village of Trumansburg on the west side of Cayuga Lake, 10 miles from Ithaca and Cornell, 10 miles from The Finger Lakes National Forest and twelve miles from Watkins Glen and numerous wineries and the race track. It is a mile from Taughannock State Park.
